Reflecting on one’s feelings is one of the most valuable tools for mental health. In fact, Theodor Reik claimed that “to hear deeply, one must learn to become sensitive to the unexpressed and listen with the “third ear ” (Young, 2021). This is often difficult to claim because we come from different backgrounds and states of mind. What I think to be the most helpful, is gaining experience. I don’t mean to put oneself in situations that can be harmful but to gain enough knowledge within other backgrounds and develop value in them. As an Asian/ Pacific Islander, I am exposed to different demographics as tourists come and go. Being in a diverse environment helps. This leads me to say that reflecting feelings could be “helpful” when being exposed to diversity. I have noticed that knowledge and experience can lead to a higher understanding of your client. I’ve discovered myself to be more aware of what I say and do towards everyone that is around me. For instance, instead of jumping to conclusions, I’ve learned to ask the five W’s: Who, What, Where, and Why. Which gives me all the factual evidence that is needed. Which prompts me to become more aware of my personal biases when speaking with anyone.
What comes with difficulty is making the reflection into a question. The example Young has included was that statements get a greater response from clients because they demonstrate knowledge while at the same time interrupting the story less than questions do. When asked directly, clients feel obliged to respond because doing so would be rude. Lifting the voice at the conclusion of a sentence is a typical mistake that can cause a reflection to become a question. Another problem that I found to be difficult, is when identifying the client’s emotion and forming it into a question: “So are you feeling sad?”. Instead of the client agreeing with our reflection or correcting it, we are providing them the choice to respond with “yes” or “no” when we pose a question.
In the field of counseling, effective communication and understanding between the counselor and the client are essential for fostering a strong therapeutic relationship. One powerful tool that counselors can utilize is reflective listening, which involves actively listening to the client’s words and emotions and then mirroring or paraphrasing them back to the client. This technique allows counselors to demonstrate empathy, gain insights into the client’s feelings, and validate their experiences. In this essay, we will explore the importance of reflective listening, its impact on the counseling process, and its role in building rapport with clients.
Reflective listening involves not only hearing the client’s words but also attuning to their emotions, body language, and unspoken cues. The quote by Theodor Reik emphasizes the significance of listening with the “third ear,” which means being sensitive to the unexpressed and underlying emotions. When counselors practice reflective listening, they convey genuine interest in the client’s experience, which can foster trust and openness.
One valuable insight shared by a peer is the role of gaining experience within diverse backgrounds to develop value in them. Exposure to various demographics and cultural contexts enhances the counselor’s ability to empathize with clients from different walks of life. This experience allows counselors to broaden their perspective, reduce biases, and better understand their clients’ unique struggles and strengths.
While reflective listening is a powerful technique, it requires finesse to avoid unintentionally turning reflections into questions. When reflections become questions, clients may feel pressured to respond in a certain way, which can hinder the therapeutic process. Therefore, counselors must be cautious in their wording and intonation to ensure that reflections remain statements rather than queries.
Reflective listening encourages clients to share more freely and feel heard and validated. Clients are more likely to respond positively to reflections as they demonstrate the counselor’s understanding and respect for their experiences. This type of empathetic communication fosters a safe and non-judgmental environment, enabling clients to explore their emotions and concerns openly.
In the broader context, the practice of reflective listening within education institutions can influence social policy by promoting inclusivity and understanding. When educators and counselors practice reflective listening, they create environments that support diverse perspectives and experiences. This approach can lead to policies that address the needs of marginalized groups and promote equity and social justice.
Reflective listening is a powerful and transformative tool in counseling that allows counselors to deeply connect with their clients, understand their emotions, and provide empathetic support. By actively listening and mirroring the client’s experiences, counselors can build rapport and trust, leading to more effective therapeutic outcomes. Moreover, reflective listening extends beyond individual counseling sessions and can influence social policy in education institutions, fostering a culture of inclusivity and empathy. Embracing the practice of reflective listening enables counselors to create meaningful change in the lives of their clients and contribute to a more compassionate and understanding society.
