DISCUSSION 1 The modern family I chose is a single mother. A single mother is a single person who gets pregnant and has a family independently (Pew Research, 2021). Single mothers can be unmarried, divorced, or widowed (Pew Research, 2021). The modern family structure of a single mother does not have support from another adult or share responsibilities with a spouse.
The challenges of having a child out of wedlock in the 1950s would have been complex. An unmarried woman getting pregnant was unacceptable in American society. If a young woman was pregnant and unmarried was considered trouble. Society often shunned unwed girls during their pregnancies and paid a massive price for premarital sex. If the girl was a teenager, she was sent away to live with a distant relative or placed in a mature home. Young women were also sent to a maturity home and almost brained washed or forced to give their babies up for adoption and weren’t given any rights (Bernard, 2018). If a woman tried to keep the baby, she was met by courts and social workers and was forced to give the baby up (Bernard, 2018). A cultural belief was that a woman who had a baby out of wedlock was considered mentally unstable and unfit to raise a child. Once women had the baby, they were given a wedding band and sent on their way. The women were sometimes met with violence outside the maturity homes as the laws did not protect women during this time (Bernard, 2018). The impact the family would have endured as a single mother during the 1950s is their child being called names like bastards by other classmates and shunned by other kids their age (Bernard, 2018).
The social changes that have taken place in the last 70 years are drastic. According to Arnett and Jensen (2019), about 21% of children live in single-parent households in America. In 1950, ‘s children living in single-parent homes were less than 9% (Pew Research, 2021). According to Pew Research (2021), almost all childbirths occur in marriage; now, there are different ways to have a baby and a family outside of marriage. Women have better education today than in the 1950s; they are entering the workforce and can support themselves and their children far better than in the 1950s (Pew Research, 2021). In modern society, mothers and women are considered the breadwinner or primary breadwinners in their families (Pew Research, 2021). Women are now obtaining higher education than men, and over 70% work full-time with children under 18. A 1993 survey showed that solo parents could raise children just as well as married couples (Pew Research, 2021). Divorce rates have increased over the decades, making solo parenting grow; 4 out of 10 births are to solo mothers (Pew Research, 2021). For example, the divorce rate in the 1950s was around 10%; today, the divorce rate is about 30%. With a higher divorce rate, there is a higher level of children living in a single-parent household.
The discussion on the modern single mother as a significant family structure highlights the drastic social changes that have taken place over the past 70 years. This flexibility allows single mothers to fulfill their responsibilities as both caregivers and breadwinners.
The shift in traditional gender roles has also contributed to the rise of single motherhood. Women are increasingly asserting their independence and opting to raise children on their own if they find themselves in non-supportive relationships. Moreover, single fathers are also becoming more prevalent, challenging gender stereotypes and embracing their roles as caregivers.
As mentioned in the colleague’s discussion, women today have greater access to education and career opportunities, leading to increased financial independence. This economic empowerment enables single mothers to provide for their children’s needs and create stable environments for their upbringing.
With increased awareness of mental health and well-being, there is growing recognition of the importance of providing adequate support to single mothers. Access to counseling, therapy, and mental health resources helps single mothers cope with the challenges of parenting, reduce stress, and foster emotional resilience.
The modern single mother’s family structure has witnessed significant social changes, leading to increased acceptance and support in society. Women now have the autonomy and freedom to become single mothers by choice, and societal perspectives have shifted to recognize the diverse and loving environments single mothers can provide for their children. Advancements in reproductive technology, shifting gender roles, financial independence, and mental health support have all contributed to the rise of single motherhood. As we continue to evolve as a society, it is crucial to foster inclusivity, support, and empowerment for single mothers, acknowledging the strength and resilience they demonstrate in nurturing and raising their children.
