Background

Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that often goes undiagnosed and untreated in medical settings. Problem

The medical unit in our healthcare facility has observed an increasing number of patients presenting with depressive symptoms that are overlooked during routine medical assessments. This highlights the need for a systematic approach to identify and manage depression in this setting. The lack of standardized depression screening tools and interventions has led to suboptimal patient care and missed opportunities for early intervention and treatment.

Methods

In response to this problem, a quality improvement project was initiated to implement the PHQ-9 depression scale on the medical unit. The project aimed to screen all admitted patients for depression using the PHQ-9 and provide appropriate interventions based on the severity of their symptoms. The implementation process involved training healthcare providers on administering the PHQ-9, developing a standardized protocol for interpreting scores, and establishing a referral system for patients requiring further evaluation and treatment.

Intervention

The PHQ-9 depression scale was integrated into the medical unit’s admission process. All patients admitted to the unit were screened using the PHQ-9 within 24 hours of admission.
