The medical unit in our healthcare facility has observed an increasing number of patients presenting with depressive symptoms that are overlooked during routine medical assessments. This highlights the need for a systematic approach to identify and manage depression in this setting. The lack of standardized depression screening tools and interventions has led to suboptimal patient care and missed opportunities for early intervention and treatment.
In response to this problem, a quality improvement project was initiated to implement the PHQ-9 depression scale on the medical unit. The project aimed to screen all admitted patients for depression using the PHQ-9 and provide appropriate interventions based on the severity of their symptoms.
