Catherine Speaking.

my name’s Catherine I’m 20. I’ve I went to my doctor they reckon I needed to come here and see you I’ve just been depressed for a bit as well like I’ve been taking these antidepressants for about two years or so about two years now

I don’t really have a lot of family; I don’t talk to my mum at all really, I got a brother though my brothers like eight maybe eight by now I don’t see him a lot I’d want to see him a bit more

I’ve come to you because I’ve just been I’ve been told that I’ve had to come to you I wanted to get help

I’ve been on crystal now for about most of you maybe seven months I just I want to get off it

I want to be able to get my life back on track and not use crystal anymore

I don’t like it like the symptoms I have when I come off it

or when I’m not using it daily, I haven’t really used it today

because I knew I had to come in here and I just I wanted to be a bit clearer coming in here and talking to you guys about it, I do use it daily like a couple times a day

I don’t really have a lot of respect for myself like my dad passed

like three years ago I was pretty close to him even though I

wasn’t close with my mom. I don’t like my mom very much I guess I started using Crystal just because of the fact that

I was out one day with a guy we were drinking he offered it I went sure and just the way it made me feel I just forgot about everything it was great I could just do everything I wanted to do I was a different person on it

I like not having to think of who I am when I’m not on it

so

I guess I just started using because like I saw all my all my friends and stuff at the time who were using, we’re just really confident and I wanted to feel great like they did and it helped I think it helped maybe it didn’t I don’t know because I’m here

when my doctor says I’ve got to be here so, I’m here

I haven’t made like the best decisions when I’m on it I don’t know

about a week ago I woke up I didn’t know where I was

I had a look at my phone I had no idea who I was with just woke up next to someone it’s not first time but you know like not the first time it happened when I first started using Crystal there were

lots of partners that I had

I’m on Crystal and I don’t remember some stuff sometimes so I don’t like that feeling but I like the confidence that it gives me

I don’t know what you can do for me does it work like I’m hoping that you can help me just get my life back on track a little bit more maybe get some friends who don’t use crystal see what that’s like maybe be around people who just like me for me not because you know I can sleep with them and that’s it and what I can give them will get them

I want to get a job as well; I don’t know if I want to reconnect with

my mom probably more around reconnection with my brother and I guess my mom’s part of that but I don’t know I just don’t think she likes me very much I didn’t like her for a lot of years either so I guess I’m just going to have to look at that I don’t drink though like so whilst I’ll use crystal, I won’t actually drink I don’t like alcohol so I don’t really do a lot of drinking either

I might have like one or two that’s it.

My father passed away I just I think that’s probably where

my depression might have started I just

got worse and worse after dad left and then last seven months, I’ve been using Crystal roughly and I you know as I said I like the confidence that it gives me I like the fact that I don’t have to you

know pretend I’m not I don’t feel so like I feel amazing

it just feels so good that sometimes I don’t like myself on it and my decisions that I make and no one really takes me seriously anyway I don’t have any of my old friends none of them want to talk to me at all so hopefully he can help me with some stuff

Supporting Catherine’s Journey to Recovery: A Holistic Approach to Healing

Introduction

In this role-play scenario, Catherine, a 20-year-old struggling with depression and crystal meth use, seeks help from a social worker. Catherine’s life has been marked by family challenges, including the loss of her father and strained relationships with her mother and peers. As the worker, the aim is to develop a comprehensive intervention plan that addresses Catherine’s substance use, depression, self-esteem, and social connections. This essay will outline the primary problem, identify irrational beliefs, propose cognitive-behavioral interventions, explore potential barriers, and discuss strategies to help Catherine embrace change.

Identifying the Primary Problem

Catherine’s primary problem is her dependence on crystal meth and its adverse effects on her life. She acknowledges the negative impact of her substance use, such as memory lapses, regretful decisions, and a lack of self-respect. Additionally, her crystal meth use has strained her relationships with friends, making it challenging for her to form positive connections and receive emotional support.

 Irrational Beliefs Displayed by Catherine

Catherine exhibits irrational beliefs related to her self-esteem and self-worth. She feels unworthy of help and believes that being a “bad parent” runs in her family, possibly leading her to accept her fate and continue with her substance use. She also feels that using crystal meth is the only way she can feel confident and forget about her problems.

Challenging Irrational Beliefs

In cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), the worker can help Catherine challenge her irrational beliefs. By exploring the evidence and consequences of these beliefs, Catherine may come to realize that she possesses the ability to change her circumstances and improve her life without relying on substances. CBT can empower Catherine to reframe negative thought patterns and develop a more positive self-perception.

Intervention for Catherine

The cognitive-behavioral intervention for Catherine will involve addressing both her crystal meth use and depressive symptoms. First, the worker will help Catherine set achievable goals, such as reducing crystal meth use gradually and engaging in healthier coping mechanisms. This may include learning stress management techniques, mindfulness exercises, and seeking support from healthy social connections.

 Barriers to Change

Several barriers may prevent Catherine from embracing change. Her ambivalence towards her ability to control her alcohol use may lead to feelings of helplessness and resistance. Fear of facing her past trauma and rebuilding relationships with her family may also pose challenges. Additionally, the physical and psychological dependence on crystal meth may make it difficult for Catherine to envision life without it.

Strategies to Help Catherine Embrace Change

To address barriers, motivational interviewing can be employed to enhance Catherine’s motivation to change and build self-efficacy. This approach can help Catherine explore the reasons she wants to change, identify the discrepancies between her current situation and her desired future, and increase her readiness for change. The worker can also utilize strengths-based approaches to highlight Catherine’s resilience and ability to overcome challenges.

Conclusion

By implementing cognitive-behavioral and motivational interventions, Catherine can progress towards her goal of regaining control of her life and finding fulfillment without relying on crystal meth. The worker’s supportive and non-judgmental approach will create a safe space for Catherine to explore her emotions, challenges, and aspirations. Through this collaborative journey, Catherine can discover her innate strengths, embrace change, and build a healthier and more fulfilling life for herself and her daughter.
