During my observation, I noticed a group of preschool-age children engaging in parallel play. Each child was playing independently with their toys, seemingly unaware of the presence of others. They were not interacting or communicating with each other, and their play activities were focused solely on their individual toys and interests.
In Developmental Psychology, I learned about the concept of egocentrism, which is a cognitive limitation observed in young children. According to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, egocentrism refers to the child’s inability to perceive the world from someone else’s perspective. They are primarily focused on their own thoughts, feelings, and point of view, leading to challenges in understanding others’ viewpoints or considering different perspectives.
Egocentrism is most prominent during the preoperational stage of cognitive development, typically observed in children between the ages of 2 to 7 years.
A classic example of egocentrism is the three-mountain task, where a child is asked to describe what a scene looks like from the perspective of a doll placed at different positions around a set of three mountains. The child struggles to accurately describe the scene from the doll’s point of view, emphasizing their own perspective.
Egocentrism can lead to challenges in communication and social interactions as young children may have difficulty understanding and considering others’ feelings and needs.
